Alexander Chairs Hearing: “100 New Nuclear Plants in 20 Years: Why We Should Do It”
Producing More American Energy and Using Less to Bridge “Energy Gap” |
| |
June 8th, 2009 - WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, chaired a hearing of the conference today to receive testimony on the importance of building 100 new nuclear plants in the United States over the next 20 years. Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) co-chaired the hearing.
“Today, there is a huge energy gap between the renewable electricity we would like to have and the reliable, low-cost electricity we must have,” Alexander said. “Conservation and nuclear power are the only real alternatives we have today to produce enough low-cost, reliable, clean electricity to clean the air, deal with climate the challenge and keep good jobs from going overseas. That’s why I will introduce legislation to build 100 new nuclear power plants during the next 20 years. Republicans are committed to doubling America’s nuclear plants, which today produce 20 percent of all our electricity, but more than 70 percent of our pollution-free, carbon-free electricity.
“Climate change may be the inconvenient problem, but nuclear power is the inconvenient answer,” Alexander added.
Witnesses at the hearing included:
• Scott Campbell, President, American Council on Global Nuclear Competitiveness.
• Michael Kurzeja, President, North American Young Generation in Nuclear.
• David Blee, Executive Director, U.S. Nuclear Infrastructure Council.
• Alex Flint, Senior Vice President, Nuclear Energy Institute.
